Waveblades

If you fancy a spot of bodysurfing from time to time, you have probably tried out a hand-board (sometimes known as a hand plane) at least once.   There are all sorts of wierd and wonderful handboarding set-ups on the market, made from materials including plastics, self-skinning foam, wood, and who can forget the trusty rubber flip-flip, which happens to not only fit perfectly under your feet after a surf, but also slots quite nicely between your fingers for a bit of extra bouyancy during a body surf session!

One thing that I haven’t seen too much of, however, is a handboard that you can attach to each of your hands.  Generally they are sold as singularly, rather than as a set of two.

So I was quite delighted to come across these Wave Blades recently.

The idea is to have one hand board on each hand. Here is a brief rundown of how these things are made:

Each pair of Wave Blades is hand made By Robert (Finman) Davis. The process takes about five-six hours. The top of the Wave Blade is covered in lycra. You can even send Robert your own custom fabrics, and he will cover your Wave Blade with that  particular fabric, so that your Wave Blades are unique.

To me, the obvious benefits of these Wave Blades, as opposed many other options on the market, are:

  1. You can go left or right, quickly, without having to swap the board to your opposite hand
  2. Swimming out is actually easier than ever, as the Wave Blades act as paddles (some boards are rather large, to the extent you are forced to use them as a kick-board)
  3. They are nice and compact, perfect for storing in a little corner in your bag or for spontaneous sessions
