New South Wales is one of the more consistent, but also more crowded, areas for surfing in Australia.
It is home to some of the most iconic towns in Australia surf culture, such as Byron Bay, Bondi Beach, and the Tweed Coast. Due to popularity of towns such as these, holiday makes from both domestic and international destinations swarm to New South Wales to be part of the action, contributing to the ever present crowds.
That said, like anywhere in the world, if you are willing to head off the beaten track, you will find some beautiful surf breaks and towns that are relatively free spirited and untouched. For example, just near Byron is Ballina, a much cheaper and far less busy area for your surf holiday, and still widely accessible to a bunch of world class breaks. Keep travelling down the coast and you’ll find the likes of Yamba, Coffs Harbour, and Port Macquaire, all amazing surf towns with equally amazing surf breaks when the conditions are right. The central coast, a couple of hours north of Sydney also offers a variety of beach breaks and rocky point breaks with less intense crowds, due to the proximity of these breaks from large cities. Sydney itself is also a surfing mecca, though as is expected with city beaches, Eastern Suburbs areas such as Maroubra attract some heavy locals to compliment the ‘big city’ vibe. Keep travelling down past Sydney, and the water gets cooler, the people get fewer, and you’ll definitely score a few waves.
The surf breaks vary, from slow 2 foot sandy point break sliders, to intense and gnarly reef breaks for chargers only. Some of the more iconic breaks in New South Wales are the insane ledging right-hand reef break known as Shark Island in Cronulla (just south of Sydney), Bondi Beach (which is more of a ‘place to be seen’ rather than world class surf break, but still fun) Snapper Rocks (aka the Superbank- the location of the Quiksilver Pro), and Duranbah (which is heralded as one of the most consistent and therefore most crowded beach breaks in the region), just to name a few.
There’s plenty more breaks of equal or even better quality than just these surf breaks though, so start searching and enjoy!

Hi there, just wandered by. I have a Quiksilver site. Truly more information than you can imagine on the web. Wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but very nice site. Have a nice day.
