South Straddie is the infamous home of super consistent short and punchy beach breaks.
With a sand dredge constantly pumping sand, the banks here are pretty reliable, as is the swell. South Straddie pulls swell whenever it is small, so does get crowded when nothing else on the Gold Coast is really breaking.
The only saving grace for keeping the crowds at bay, is that you have to paddle across the Southport Seaway to get to South Straddie. It’s a daunting paddle mainly due to the fishing trawlers who throw fish guts over the side of their boats on their way out to sea (and we all know big things with fins are attracted to free food).
Protected by the breakwall from Southerly winds, this spot is also a bit more powerful than the breaks further South. Often plenty of barrels (and snapped boards) to be had at 3 feet or above.
